7 Steps To Growing Your Own SCOBY For Homemade Kombucha

Have you joined the kombucha craze yet? I had just learned of this unique beverage right before I started seeing it available at all my local grocery stores. On a whim, I decided to give it a try and found myself pretty intrigued.

After some investigation online, I learned how great regular consumption of kombucha can be for your digestion. The bacteria that are present in kombucha are fantastic for building up your digestive flora and making your entire digestive process more efficient. This efficiency can actually help you to lose excess weight that you might be carrying around too. Not a bad deal from just one little drink.

When I was in the thick of my excitement about kombucha growing, I decided if I was going to do it, I was going to go all the way. I was going to do the whole thing on the cheap and from as much scratch as I could figure out.

Here’s the easiest method for growing your own SCOBY to start up your own homebrewing kombucha.

Step 1: Buy one bottle of good quality kombucha at your local grocery store or health food store.

Step 2: Make one cup of sweetened tea by mixing together one cup of brewed black tea and one tablespoon of sugar. Set aside to cool to room temperature.

Step 3: Empty the bottle of kombucha into a glass jar.

Step 4: Cover the jar with a paper towel or dish cloth and secure with a rubber band.

Step 5: Place the jar in a dark corner of your kitchen or pantry.

Step 6: Wait two weeks for the SCOBY to form on the surface.

Step 7: Get started brewing your first batch of kombucha with your brand new self-started SCOBY!

Although you can easily purchase a SCOBY to get started on your kombucha brewing adventures, making one from scratch is a fun and fulfilling experiment to watch come to life in your kitchen. I encourage you to give it a try and start reaping the health benefits of kombucha as soon as possible!
